Pharmaceutical Ingredients

Active pharmaceutical ingredients, or API, are chemical compounds that have been isolated from raw pharmaceutical materials or achieved through organic synthesis to provide the active substances responsible for causing the intended effects of a drug. These compounds are much more complex than synthetic compounds, and thus need to be replicated rather than created from scratch. As a result of this complexity and their presence in every kind of medication, organic synthesis is an incredibly important part of pharmaceutical development. Some of the important chemicals in obtaining APIs include hydrochloric acid, aromatic sulfonic acid, and monochloroacetic acid—all of which act as catalysts in the process of organic synthesis.

Monochloroacetic acid, in particular, is a highly valued semi-finished product that is widely used through the pharmaceutical industry. It may even be more familiar than you’d think because it’s used in the creation of common medications like Ibuprofen, caffeine, vitamins, glycine, and more.

Industrial and Manufacturing

Operations in the chemical manufacturing sector include:

  • Basic chemicals facilities produce chemicals by basic processes, such as thermal cracking and distillation. Products include petrochemicals, industrial gases, synthetic dyes and pigments, and many other organic and inorganic chemicals.
  • Coatings and adhesives facilities mix pigments, solvents, and binders into architectural and industrial paints; manufacture paint products such as paint removers and thinners; and manufacture adhesives, glues, and caulking compounds.
  • Resins and synthetic rubber facilities manufacture resins, plastic materials, synthetic rubber, and fibers and filaments.

Janitorial and Institutional

Industrial and institutional (I&I) cleaners are defined as those cleaners intended for routine cleaning of industrial, commercial, and public institutions, outside of the normal household environment. I&I cleaners are used in numerous applications by various customer types, and employ a variety of chemicals including acids, alcohols, bleaches, disinfectants, solvents, and surfactants. Segmentation and analysis of the market can therefore vary; however, this report focuses on segmentation by end-use application.

The I&I cleaning market has not been immune to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Demand and growth rates vary by region depending on how the spread of the virus has been successfully contained. Those areas that have suffered from national lockdowns such as the hospitality, restaurant, and nonessential retail sectors have suffered, while the healthcare, hospitals, and institutions that have remained open have seen a surge in demand for cleaning products and services, particularly sanitizing and disinfectant products. Demand for hand sanitizers in workplaces, healthcare sectors, and public areas has surged in 2020 and while demand is likely to pull back sharply in 2021 and 2022, underlying growth will remain strong over the forecast period as hygiene concerns persist and new investments are made in the healthcare sector.
