Calcium Chloride

Calcium Chloride, CaCl2, is a salt of calcium and chloride. It behaves as a typical ionic halide, and is solid at room temperature. Common applications include brine for refrigerations plants, ice and dust control on roads, and desiccation.

Calcium Chloride is frequently used in drying tubes. Its approved by the FDA to use in packing to ensure dryness, used in deicing and freezing point depression on roadways, used to increase water hardness in swimming pools (thus reducing the erosion of the concrete in the pool), used in aquariums to provide calcium for calcium carbonate-shelled animals, used as a firming agent in canned vegetables, electrolyte in sports drinks, flavor pickles, and even in brewing beer! Medicinal uses include that it can be injected as intravenous therapy for the treatment of hypocalcaemia, magnesium intoxication, and prevention of heart attacks in certain situations. Calcium Chloride is used in concrete mixes  to help set up the initial setting speed, plastics, fire extinguishers, blast furnaces, and fabric softener.
