Ion Exchange Resins

Softening · Demineralization · Deionization · Food Grade

Ion exchange resins are the core technology behind water softening, demineralization, and ultrapure water production. From municipal softeners to pharmaceutical-grade mixed-bed polishers, the right resin selection determines system performance, regenerant consumption, and treated water quality. Texas-Chem supplies the full range of cation, anion, mixed-bed, and food-grade resins.

Applications

Water Softening

Strong acid cation (SAC) resin in sodium form exchanges calcium and magnesium ions for sodium, preventing scale formation in boilers, cooling towers, and process equipment. The most common ion exchange application — regenerated with sodium chloride (salt).

Demineralization & Deionization

Two-bed (cation + anion) and mixed-bed systems remove all dissolved ions from water, producing deionized (DI) water for boiler makeup, pharmaceutical manufacturing, electronics rinsing, and laboratory use. Mixed-bed polishers achieve resistivity >10 MΩ·cm.

Condensate Polishing

Mixed-bed resins remove corrosion products (iron, copper) and trace ionic contamination from steam condensate in power plants and industrial steam systems. Protects boilers from corrosion and maintains steam purity.

Nitrate & Perchlorate Removal

Selective anion exchange resins remove nitrate and perchlorate from drinking water to meet EPA MCLs. Nitrate-selective resins are used in municipal water treatment and point-of-use systems for agricultural areas with elevated nitrate.

Food & Beverage Processing

Food-grade ion exchange resins deacidify fruit juices, decolorize sugar syrups, demineralize whey, and purify amino acids and vitamins. FDA-compliant resins are required for all food contact applications.

Pharmaceutical & Ultrapure Water

Mixed-bed and electrodeionization (EDI) systems produce USP purified water and water for injection (WFI) for pharmaceutical manufacturing. Resin quality and regenerant purity are critical for meeting pharmacopeial specifications.
