Industrial Gear Oil Formulation
Gear oil additive packages are used by lubricant blenders formulating industrial gear oils (ISO 68–680, AGMA 1–9) for enclosed gearboxes, worm drives, and industrial drive systems across Texas.
Automotive Gear Lubricant Formulation
Used to formulate API GL-4 and GL-5 automotive gear lubricants (75W-90, 80W-140) for manual transmissions, transaxles, and hypoid axle differentials.
Mining & Aggregate Processing
Heavy-duty EP gear oils formulated with this additive package protect the large gearboxes and drive systems used in mining, quarrying, and aggregate processing equipment.
Wind Energy
Specialized gear oil additive packages are used in wind turbine gearbox lubricants, a growing application in Texas wind energy operations across West Texas and the Panhandle.
Marine Gear Oil
Used to formulate marine gear oils for ship propulsion gearboxes, stern tube bearings, and deck machinery requiring EP protection in marine environments.
Worm Gear Oil
The copper passivator in this additive package is critical for worm gear oil formulation, protecting the bronze worm wheel from corrosion by active sulfur EP agents.
For ISO 68–220 industrial gear oils (AGMA 2–5), a treat rate of 5–8% is typical. For ISO 320–680 heavy industrial gear oils (AGMA 6–9) and API GL-5 automotive gear lubricants, 10–15% treat rate is used. The higher treat rate provides the additional EP performance required for hypoid gear applications. Contact Texas-Chem at 855-TEX-CHEM for formulation guidance.
API GL-4 is specified for manual transmissions and transaxles with moderate EP requirements. API GL-5 is specified for hypoid axles and differentials with high EP requirements — it contains more active sulfur and phosphorus than GL-4. GL-5 lubricants can be corrosive to yellow metals (brass, bronze) in some transmissions — check OEM specifications before using GL-5 in a GL-4 application.
Yes. The additive package is suitable for formulating AGMA 9 EP worm gear oils when blended with appropriate base oil. Worm gear oils require good EP performance and copper corrosion control — the built-in copper passivator in this package addresses the copper corrosion concern from the bronze worm wheel.
Group I or Group II paraffinic base oil is the standard base stock for gear oil formulation with this additive package. The base oil viscosity grade is selected to achieve the target ISO viscosity grade in the finished fluid. Texas-Chem supplies both the base oil and the additive package for a complete gear oil formulation solution.
