Melamine is an organic base and trimmer of cyanamide, with a 1,3,5-triazine skeleton. It is formed in the body of mammals who have ingested cyromazine. It has been reported that cyromazine can also be converted to melamine in plants.
Melamine is used in Formica, dinnerware, laminate flooring, and dry erase boards. It is also used in insulation, soundproofing material and polymeric cleaning products. Melamine is used as a superplasticizer for making concrete and even as a fertilizer. Melamine and its salts are used as fire-retardant additives in paints, plastics, and paper.
Interesting Fact - Melamine is sometimes illegally added to food products in order to increase the apparent protein content!
